Magyar Confirms Intimate Relationship With Vogel as “Sex Tape” Threat Roils Campaign

Di Vora Matteo, 2026.02.17.2026.02.23.

A teaser website, an allegedly pending video and duelling statements turn a private matter into a political flashpoint

Hungarian opposition leader Péter Magyar said on Thursday that he had a consensual sexual relationship with Vogel Evelin “in that bed” shown in a photo that circulated online days earlier, as he sought to pre-empt what he described as a politically motivated attempt to leak compromising material during the election campaign.

Magyar made the disclosure in a video statement, saying he was speaking out to deny opponents the ability to “distract” the public for weeks with insinuations. He also denied using drugs, addressing speculation that had spread alongside the image.

How the story began: a teaser site and a bedroom image

The controversy has centred on a mysterious website that began posting or promoting content linked to the episode. According to Hungarian reporting, the site published a photo of a bedroom that was widely shared and interpreted as a teaser for further material, including an implied video.

In his statement, Magyar said he had been present at the location shown in the image and that Vogel Evelin was with him. He described the encounter as consensual and private, but argued it was now being weaponised as part of a “smear” operation.

International coverage framed the episode as a sign of an intensifying and increasingly personal campaign environment ahead of Hungary’s April election, with Magyar alleging that a secretly recorded intimate video could be used against him.

Magyar’s claim: a “Russian-style” kompromat operation

Magyar accused the government’s circle of orchestrating what he called a “Russian-style” intelligence operation, using kompromat tactics to intimidate and discredit political opponents. He presented his decision to speak first as a defensive move aimed at blunting the impact of any potential leak and keeping the campaign focused on policy issues.

In both Hungarian- and English-language Euronews coverage, Magyar was quoted describing the episode as political blackmail. He also addressed drug-related insinuations directly, stating that he had not used narcotics.

Hungarian outlet Telex similarly reported that Magyar said he was “pouring clean water into the glass” by confirming the relationship and rejecting the drug allegations, and that he connected the timing of the episode to broader political battles.

Vogel Evelin responds: openness to joint legal action

After Magyar’s public statement, Vogel Evelin also commented. According to 168.hu, which cited remarks given to Hungarian outlet 444, Vogel said she would be willing—“even jointly”—to pursue legal action related to the episode.

The same reporting described her response as focused on the circumstances around the website and the broader effort to publicise private material, rather than a detailed account of the relationship itself.
